#128 EMPOWERING MY DAUGHTER PART 1

Malta based Reuters photographer Darrin Zammit Lupi is no stranger to important news events having photographed the South-East Asia tsunami tragedy, the refugee crisis during the war in Kosovo, the war in Libya, the Costa Concordia disaster and the Mediterranean refugees crisis.

My personal introduction to this story came via a retweet from a photojournalist who also covered the latter crisis, Jason Florio. It was titled; ‘The pandemic, a deadly cancer and my 14 year old daughter.’ Pictorially the text was supported by the image below, a photography that has become the cover image for the feature within Reuters’ Wider Image portal. I remember being struck by the beautiful capture of this very personal stark scene, not sure if that was the correct emotive response I should have to the narrative within. I read on and I knew this was a story I wanted to bring to the Photography Daily audience.

The moment we pick up a camera we have the ability to do good and important things; to record history, to make potent stories about life. For some people, some photographers, these are images that shape opinion, garner connection, even change lives. It’s, I believe, a mistake to think that to make such pictures, you need to be filing big international stories, when often the story is with us and all around us, and in this case within a room in a hospital with the most precious person in your life. This is part one of a two parter called Empowering my Daughter; the second part airs tomorrow.

The show is partnered by again this month by MPB.com the online platform for buying, selling and trading used gear. Every time you sell, or buy or trade kit, MPB will plant a tree; it's all part of driving the circular economy.

I’d welcome your feedback as ever, as I take your ‘letters’ on the Friday Photowalk. Email the show: studio@photographydaily.show
